Ukrainian president says Kyiv welcomes Washington’s proposal
Kyiv was prepared for a ceasefire in air and at sea with Russia, but the US proposed extending it to land during Tuesday’s talks in Saudi Arabia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed on Thursday.
“Ukraine was ready for an air and sea ceasefire, but the US proposed extending it to land. Ukraine welcomes this proposal. The control of such a ceasefire remains an important issue, and we appreciate the United States’ willingness to organize the technical aspects of such control,” he said on X.
He expressed gratitude to both countries’ teams for their efforts, which led to the resumption of US military and intelligence aid to Ukraine.
The Ukrainian president said the need to guarantee security, along with cooperation with European partners and further joint steps, was part of the discussions.
Zelenskyy’s message comes as US special envoy Steven Witkoff arrived in Moscow, where he is reportedly scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Commenting on the US proposal, Russian presidential aid Yury Ushakov said a final decision will be taken by Putin.
