Fighters from the Military Operations Administration were seen at the entrance of Syria’s presidential palace after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government.
A video circulating on social media showing at least two fighters at the entrance of the palace shooting in the air while the person recording the video saying, “thank God, we have reached the presidential palace’s entrance.”
Another video circulating on social media showed people entering the Iranian embassy in Damascus and removing a large picture hanging on the embassy building that included senior Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani, whose assassinated was ordered by US President-elect Donald Trump, and Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s secretary general who was killed by Israel.
Sources told Al Arabiya that information is circulating about Iranian embassy employees withdrawing from the embassy.
The armed opposition groups announced early Sunday that al-Assad has “fled” and declared that “the city of Damascus free.”
The Military Operations Administration has pressed a lightning offensive since November 27, sweeping swathes of the country from government control, including major cities Aleppo, Hama and Homs.
The developments also come amid reports of chaos ensuing at Damascus International Airport.
